Restoring a community to a vibrant social and spiritual life involves moving beyond an effort to meet basic physical needs, and into encouraging positive spiritual and social health. This effort to meet education and spiritual development needs is a move to end the cycle of poverty and dependence.

Spiritual Development

Mentor Leaders works to encourage spiritual development in 3 ways.

1 — Through Mentor Leaders Academy, a Christian school located at the heart of each mission.

While the schools are in varied states of development, all of them employ Christian teachers who teach the Bible, a curriculum that meets the respective national requirements, and our own developing criteria for excellence.

The “Will Smith” Mentor Leaders Academy, our most developed school in Gbentchal, Togo, hosts a teacher housing complex (apartments), five buildings that house grades preschool through high school, and the Charlie Naylor Library.

In 2018, a new two-story, twelve classroom school was built in Giotin, Haiti.

2 — Through short term missions.

Every year, we send a team of missionaries to host a quality Bible Camp experience for local youth. Through these camps, many “westerners” have been given the opportunity to build life-long relationships with academy students and other village youth.

In 2019, two 30-person teams went to Togo and Haiti.

3 — Through partnership with the local church.

Mentor Leaders works alongside the local church to partner with them in their evangelistic campaigns, as well as leadership development.

It has been exciting to see the church in Togo grow under the leadership of Pastor William Koatidja. Young men are now traveling to satellite churches and preaching the gospel to hundreds each Sunday.

Academic and Business Development

Academic and Business Development

The academic development of the village youth is always a primary concern.

While Mentor Leaders Academies endeavor to teach the gospel, they also aim to achieve academic excellence. Our goal isn’t just to meet the national requirements, but to surpass them and be the best school we can be. Togo’s “Will Smith” Mentor Leaders Academy continues to achieve recognition as a top school in the region. (measured by test scores)

Mentor Leaders is training students with skills that will equip them in building their community. As the cliche goes, “give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime.” Expanding the analogy, we endeavor to teach young people how to build a fishing enterprise. Though the spiritual development of our young people is our top priority, agricultural and business development are also at the heart of our curriculum.

We are excited about the future for Mentor Leaders in Togo, as we look forward to building the first fully functional Christian University in the northern part of the country. The land is purchased, and we hope to break ground in the next one to two years. We will train young minds in Christian leadership, business, agriculture, civil engineering, computer science, house an internet cafe, and a center for benevolence through which the community in Dapaong will be served.

Beyond the classroom, Mentor Leaders is working to help build farms for livestock, a sewing industry, as well as vocational training for mason work. Teaching foundational skills, training for business, and partnering with locals to build enterprises of their own is a significant part of what we do in the restoration process.
