RESTORATION

Restoring a community to a vibrant social and spiritual life involves moving beyond an effort to meet basic physical needs, and into encouraging positive spiritual and social health. This effort to meet education and spiritual development needs is a move to end the cycle of poverty and dependence.

Spiritual Development

The Spiritual development that Mentor Leaders’ works to provide comes through three avenues. First, through Mentor Leaders Academy, a Christian school located at the heart of each mission. While each school is in a varying state of development, all of them employ Christian teachers who teach the Bible each day along with a curriculum that meets national requirements as well as Mentor Leaders developing criteria for excellence. The “Will Smith” Mentor Leaders Academy, our most developed school, hosts a teacher housing complex (apartments), and 5 buildings that house grades from preschool to High School and now includes the brand new Charlie Naylor Library. 2018 saw the building of a brand new school building in Giotin: two story building with a total of twelve classrooms.

The second vein of Spiritual Development comes through our short term missions through which we send an annual team of missionaries to teach and deliver a quality Bible Camp experience for local youth. Through this camp, many “westerners” have been given opportunity to build life-long relationships and friendships with Academy students and other village youth! In 2019, teams were sent to Haiti and to Togo to teach youth camps, a total of about 30 missionaries.

Finally, Mentor Leaders works alongside local churches to partner with them in their evangelistic campaigns as well as leadership development. It has been exciting to see the church in Togo grow, build satellite campuses, and send out young men to preach the gospel each Sunday under the tutelage of Pastor William Koatidja who leads the church there. Hundreds are in attendance each Sunday.

Academic and Business Development

The Academic development of the village youth is also a primary concern. While Mentor Leaders Academies endeavor to teach the gospel, they also aim to achieve academic excellence. While we do meet national requirements for education, it is our goal to be the best school we can be! Togo’s “Will Smith” Mentor Leader’s Academy has achieved national recognition as a top school in the region by test scores. In addition to academic excellence, Mentor Leaders is currently developing plans to raise students up with a mind to develop skills necessary for the building up of their community. As the cliche goes – “Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime!” Expanding the analogy, we endeavor to teach young people how to build a fishing enterprise  Agricultural and Business development are at the heart of Mentor Leaders Academy even as we prioritize the Spiritual development of these young hearts and minds.

The future of Mentor Leaders in Togo is to build the first fully functional Christian University in the northern part of the country. Partnering with other organizations in the U.S., we hope to break ground on this project within the next year or two as land for it has already been purchased. In addition to training young minds for Christian leadership, business and agriculture, the university will house an internet cafe and a center for benevolence through which the community in Dapaong will be served.

Beyond the classroom, Mentor Leaders has worked toward helping build farms for livestock, a sewing industry as well as vocational training for mason work. Teaching foundational skills, training for business, and partnering with locals to build enterprises of their own is a significant part of what it means when we build sustainability within our communities.
